the thing is… is a quartet driven by urgency. The name itself feels like a held breath, an ellipsis that pulls you in before a thought is fully formed. Their songs are raw, honest, and emotionally unfiltered, centring vivid portrayals of female rage, survival, and lived experience. Vocals sit at the heart of the sound, intimate and exposed; set against fuzzy, driven guitars that feel both confrontational and vulnerable. Awkward, cathartic, and deeply memorable, the music invites listeners into memories and doesn’t let go.
Dynamic live performances have seen them rise through the local circuit in Belfast, seeing them to iconic local venues such as Mandela Hall, The Belfast Empire and Limelight, with shows in major English cities such as Liverpool and Birmingham.
Being female-fronted, the group have authentically carved their identity into all of their work, challenging the gender norms of the genre. In doing so, they seek not to fit into the scene, but to stand out entirely. The same can be said of their inspirations. In drawing from the influence of the likes of Wolf Alice, Paramore, Wunderhorse and many others, the group create truly original musical expressions that are greater than the sum of their parts.
